Volodymyr Kukorenchuk

Director of Photography

Volodymyr Kukorenchuk was born in the village of Bystrik in the Sumy region in 1947. He graduated from the camera department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow in 1974. Later he worked at the “Ukrkinokhronika” studio. His early credits include “Possession” (1977), “Oles Honchar. Strokes to the Portrait” (1979), “The Way I Write. Ostap Vyshnia” (1982) “Disturbing Spanish Sky” (1985, National Taraz Shevchenko Prize) and others. Kukorenchuk has collaborated with Sergiy Bukovsky on numerous films, including “Tomorrow is a Holiday” (1987), “The Night Was Dark” (1989), “The Roof” (1990), “Landscape. Portrait. Still Life. (1993), “Spell Your Name” (2006) and others. In the course of his career, he has filmed more than 100 documentaries, fiction films and TV series. His films have been awarded prizes at many International film festivals in Germany, Hungary, Poland and Russia. In 2008, Volodymyr was named Honored Artist of Ukraine. His photographic works have been shown at three individual exhibitions, the last of which took place in October 2008 at the Cultural Center of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.  

Volodymyr Kukorenchuk has also worked for television for ten years (1995-2005) at the STB and TET Channels. In addition, he has trained many talented cameramen and directors of photography. His student Ihor Strembytsky at the Karpenko-Karyi Kiev State Institute of Theatrical Arts (Workshop together with Sergey Bukovsky) was awarded the Palme d’Or at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival for the first time in the history of Ukrainian cinematography for his short documentary “Wayfarers”. Volodymyr Kukorenchuk currently teaches photography at the National University of Culture and Arts. His students have received numerous international prizes. One of his students, Ivan Chernychkin, was named one of the 12 best young photographers in the international contest “World Press Photo 2006”.
